Lawrence downs Bluejays in five sets

ELMHURST, Ill. -- The Lawrence University volleyball team finished off an unbeaten weekend at the Elmhurst Invitational on Saturday with a 3-2 win over host Elmhurst University at R.A. Faganal Hall.
Lawrence defeated the Bluejays 17-25, 25-22, 26-24, 23-25, 15-11. The Vikings also defeated the University of Olivet and Manchester University at the tournament.
Margaret Hahnke led three Lawrence players who hit double digits in kills for the match. Hahnke finished with a match-high 18 kills and added 10 digs, three blocks and two aces. Audrey Weier added 15 kills, seven blocks and three digs for the Vikings, and Hazel Cook had 10 kills, seven blocks and three digs.
Setter Ally Corrente posted 43 assists and picked up five kills, four digs and two aces.
Lawrence's defense, which limited Elmhurst to a .118 hitting percentage, was led by Aria Wessel and the blockers up front. Wessel finished with 18 digs, and Amanda Vlkovic added 10. Cook and Weier led the blockers, and Chania Tinch added four blocks to Lawrence's total of 22.
After dropping the opening set, Lawrence (14-4) pulled away late in the second set. With the score tied at 21-21, Lawrence got a kill from Hahnke and a Corrente ace to take a two-point led. Elmhurst cut the lead to 23-22, but a pair of Elmhurst attack errors gave Lawrence the second set.
Lawrence trailed 24-22 in the third set before a four-point run to close it out. Four consecutive kills from Corrente, Cook, Corrente and Alayna Geiser gave the Vikings the third set and a 2-1 lead.
Elmhurst (4-11) came back to win the fourth and force a decisive fifth set. Lawrence led 6-5 in the fifth before a Tinch kill and an ace from Geiser. An Elmhurst attack error and another Geiser ace gave Lawrence a 10-5 lead.
Lawrence pushed the lead to 14-9 before Elmhurst picked up a pair of points to close the margin to three. An Elmhurst serve into the net delivered the match point for the Vikings.
Lawrence is back in action on Wednesday when the Vikings travel to UW-Stout.
