Lawrence shuts out Pioneers in league opener

APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University women's soccer team opened Midwest Conference play Saturday with a 2-0 shutout of Grinnell College on Ron Roberts Field at the Banta Bowl.
Kate Noonan had a goal and an assist to lead Lawrence (3-3-4, 1-0-0 MWC) to the victory. Noonan led a defensive charge that limited Grinnell to just five shots. Lawrence goalkeeper Ella Lysne made two saves to record the shutout.
After a scoreless opening half, Ava Elders got Lawrence on the board at the 54:17 mark when she scored off a pass from Noonan for a 1-0 edge.
With Lawrence protecting the one-goal edge, Noonan put the game away with 3:15 remaining. Lawrence drew a foul in the Grinnell penalty box, and Noonan buried the penalty kick for a 2-0 advantage.
Grinnell goalkeeper Peyton Dixon didn't record a save for the Pioneers, who have lost to Lawrence three consecutive times.
