Vikings lose close contest to Wildcats

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Lawrence University (0-15-0) was shut out by St. Catherine University (8-5-0), 2–0, on Saturday. Despite 30 saves from Lawrence's goaltender, the Wildcats secured the win with a power-play goal in the second period.

The first period began with Annika Solberg in goal for Lawrence, facing off against St. Catherine's Anna Friendshuh. The Vikings generated early offensive opportunities, including shots from Maddie O'Brien and Reese Deibert, yet were unable to find the back of the net. Despite consistent pressure, the Wildcats' defense blocked several attempts.

Solberg was instrumental in maintaining a scoreless frame, making multiple saves against St. Catherine's offensive efforts, including shots from Isabel Burt and Ana Myers. The teams exchanged power plays without converting, and the period concluded with both sides unable to break the deadlock. The score remained 0–0 after the first.

St. Catherine opened the second period with a scoring push, taking the lead at 17:06 with a goal from Michelle Smith, assisted by Ana Myers and Samantha Bogen. Lawrence responded by maintaining defensive pressure, with Solberg making several key saves to keep the deficit manageable.

The Wildcats extended their advantage at 9:50 during a power play, with Samantha Bogen scoring off assists from Emma Keith and Isabella Brady. The Vikings continued to apply pressure, but their attempts were thwarted by St. Catherine's defense. The period concluded with Lawrence trailing 2–0.

St. Catherine maintained its defensive strength in the third period, successfully stifling Lawrence's offensive efforts. Despite multiple attempts from Lawrence players, including shots by Reese Deibert and Evelyn Pryadkin, Friendshuh made crucial saves to keep the home team ahead. The Vikings' power play opportunities, following a high-sticking penalty on Sara Cooney, did not yield a goal due to blocked shots and missed opportunities.

Solberg, in goal for Lawrence, provided solid defense, saving several shots, including attempts by Raechel Painovich and Ana Myers. However, the Vikings could not capitalize on any offensive momentum to reduce the deficit. The game concluded with St. Catherine preserving their 2-0 lead giving the home team the win over the VikingsĀ
