Vikings hold off scrappy Buccaneers

APPLETON, Wis. — Lawrence (10-7, 3-5 Midwest Conference) secured a 64-58 victory over Beloit (5-12, 0-8 Midwest Conference) on Wednesday at Alexander Gym. Lawrence dominated the paint, outscoring Beloit 34-20 in that area.

Lawrence opened the game with strong inside play, scoring 14 points in the paint during the first half. Nicholas Gouriotis and Hogan Demovsky each contributed to the scoring, with Demovsky hitting a pair of 3-pointers that helped Lawrence seize momentum midway through the half. Lawrence also capitalized on second-chance opportunities, scoring seven points from offensive rebounds.

Despite Lawrence's efforts, the half saw multiple lead changes. The Buccaneers countered with effective shooting from beyond the arc, converting seven 3-pointers. As the half concluded, Beloit held a slight edge, leading 32–26.

Lawrence opened the second half with an impactful layup from Casey Schoenecker, assisted by Demovsky, setting the tone for the half. After trailing, the Vikings responded with a 3-pointer from Nathan Valentine at 15:46, assisted by Nolan Koch, which initiated a scoring surge to close the gap. This momentum continued with Demovsky's 3-pointer at 15:21, followed by Schoenecker's layup at 14:28, pulling Lawrence within two points.

Midway through the half, Lawrence's defense and strategic plays led to a series of successful possessions. Schoenecker's layup at 9:16, assisted by CJ Campbell, was crucial in maintaining close proximity on the scoreboard. The team capitalized on turnovers and free throws, with Demovsky sinking two crucial free throws in the final seconds to seal the lead.

Lawrence concluded the half outscoring Beloit 38-26, closing with a strong defensive and offensive effort to secure a 64-58 win over the visiting Buccaneers.
