Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Vikings can't hold off Sabers

FOND DU LAC, Wis. — Lawrence University (2-16-0, 2-9-0) fell to Marian University (8-9-0, 5-6-0), 3-2, at the Blue Line Family Ice Center. The Vikings took an early lead with a two-goal first period, but the Sabres secured the win with two goals in the third period.

The game commenced with Marian winning the initial faceoff, but Lawrence's defense, anchored by Sarah Dobrzynski in goal, withstood early pressure. The Sabres scored first at 6:09 with an unassisted goal by Ella Spies. The Vikings responded at 11:53 with Kate Boberg finding the back of the net unassisted, leveling the game 1-1.

Lawrence gained momentum, and Reese Deibert scored at 15:32, assisted by Evelyn Pryadkin and Meg Landman, to take the lead. The period concluded with Lawrence holding a 2-1 advantage, having turned the deficit into a lead with strategic play.

The second period began with Marian's offensive pressure, but the Vikings' defense, anchored by Dobrzynski, held firm. Dobrzynski made several key saves, neutralizing multiple attempts by the Sabres, including efforts from Olivia Church and Yazmine Gonzalez. Despite being shorthanded due to penalties, Lawrence successfully killed Marian's power play opportunities.

Midway through the period, the Vikings gained a power play following Caitlin Traver's penalty for cross-checking. Although Lawrence created scoring chances, they were unable to convert, with Jillian Traver in goal for Marian making crucial saves. As the period concluded, Lawrence maintained its defensive resilience, keeping the score level at 0–0 heading into the final period.

Lawrence entered the third period with determination, securing an early faceoff win by Emma Perry. The visiting team maintained pressure with shots from Emmerson Berger and Ashley Slupe, though none found the back of the net. However, Marian shifted the momentum with two quick goals by Piper Miller at 11:47 and 11:19, assisted by Logan Crawford and Zowie Hunter, giving the home team a 3–2 lead.

The Vikings responded with strategic play, including a power play opportunity following penalties on Marian, but were unable to capitalize. Despite late efforts, including an empty-net strategy in the final minute, Lawrence could not close the gap. The period ended with Marian maintaining their lead, finalizing the score at 3–2 and a win for the home team.
