Vikings pick up road win over Lady Blues

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. — Lawrence (14-4, 7-2 Midwest Conference) defeated Illinois College (8-10, 4-5 Midwest Conference), 59-49, at Sherman Gymnasium, fueled by 23 points off turnovers and a 39-32 rebounding advantage.

Lawrence opened the first quarter with a solid defensive performance, forcing Illinois College into six turnovers and converting those into five points. Kate Adams contributed significantly with two 3-pointers, the first at 8:27 and the second at 5:12, helping to establish an early lead. Sophie Morey added to the effort with a layup at the 18-second mark to extend the lead.

Lawrence led 15-10 at the end of the first quarter, maintaining a five-point advantage by capitalizing on second-chance opportunities and defensive rebounds.

The second quarter began with a pivotal defensive stand for Lawrence, highlighted by Charlotte Brennan's steal at 8:04. Lawrence capitalized on turnovers and dominated the paint with a 12-6 advantage, including a notable fast-break layup by Josie Eager at 4:40.

Lawrence maintained pressure through effective ball movement, assisting on three of their six field goals. The visitors extended their lead by scoring eight points off turnovers and closed the quarter ahead. The score at the end of the second quarter was Lawrence 27, Illinois College 20.

Lawrence maintained a steady performance in the third quarter, highlighted by Eager's critical 3-pointer at 8:13, which extended their lead. Olivia Kesti contributed with a key jumper, and Brennan added to the advantage with a layup, keeping Lawrence ahead. Despite the Blueboys' efforts, including a 3-pointer by Aubrey Kietzman, Lawrence matched their opponent's scoring throughout the quarter.

The visiting team capitalized on free throws, with Morey and Brennan converting all attempts, reinforcing their position. Defensive efforts, including blocks from Morey and Josie Chose, helped maintain control. The quarter concluded with Lawrence keeping Illinois College at bay, resulting in a tied third quarter score of 13-13, sustaining their overall lead.

Lawrence started the fourth quarter with a strong offensive push, highlighted by Eager's 3-pointer just 11 seconds into play. This early score was followed by Kesti's jumper at 9:02, assisted by Eager, extending Lawrence's lead to 45-33. Despite a brief response from Illinois College, Lawrence maintained momentum with key contributions from Morey and Brennan, each adding vital points to protect the lead.

As the quarter progressed, Illinois College managed to close the gap to within three points at 48-45. However, Lawrence responded effectively, with Adams scoring a crucial layup at 1:11 to widen the margin again. Adams' subsequent free throws further solidified Lawrence's advantage, and Brennan added a layup to ensure the lead was maintained.

In the final minute, Lawrence capitalized on defensive stops and free-throw opportunities to extend their lead. Adams sealed the quarter with two free throws and the win for the Vikings.
