APPLETON, Wis. — Lawrence University turned in a complete performance Saturday at the Banta Bowl, using a four-goal attack and a strong defensive effort to earn a 4-0 victory over Cornell College.
The Vikings established an early advantage when William Plougmand Mikkelsen converted a penalty kick in the sixth minute. The goal gave Lawrence the lead it would carry into halftime after a first-half stretch in which the Vikings created several scoring opportunities and limited Cornell's chances.
Lawrence wasted little time adding to its advantage after the break. Daito Sho found the back of the net in the 47th minute, finishing a sequence assisted by Grayson Ogren and Julian Mohn. The goal provided an early second-half boost and pushed the Vikings' lead to two.
The Vikings continued to apply pressure as the half progressed. Lawrence added a third goal in the 73rd minute on an own goal before Ogren converted another penalty kick in the 80th minute to put the match out of reach at 4-0. The two penalty kicks, combined with Sho's finish and the own goal, accounted for all four Lawrence goals.
The offensive production was backed by control throughout the match. Lawrence finished with 14 shots, putting nine on target, while Cornell managed nine shots and four on goal. The Vikings also held a 65 percent share of possession and earned five corner kicks.
Cristian Puebla made three saves during his time in goal, and Robert Hane added another late in the match as Lawrence completed the shutout. The defensive effort helped the Vikings protect their lead while continuing to create opportunities at the other end.
The victory moved Lawrence to 6-3-2 overall and gave the Vikings a convincing result against the Rams. With goals coming from Mikkelsen, Sho and Ogren, along with the own goal, Lawrence paired its attacking efficiency with a disciplined performance across the field.
