Vikings erupt in second half in big win over Rams

APPLETON, Wis. — Lawrence University overwhelmed Cornell College with a four-goal second half Saturday at the Banta Bowl, turning a scoreless match at halftime into a 4-0 women's soccer victory.

The Vikings controlled the attacking end throughout the opening half, generating 20 shots and eight corner kicks. Despite the steady pressure, Cornell kept the match scoreless through the first 45 minutes, leaving Lawrence looking for a breakthrough after the interval.

That breakthrough came almost immediately. Just 10 seconds into the second half, Hannah Kalt scored at 45:10 off an assist from Kylie Melonis to put the Vikings in front. The quick strike gave Lawrence the lead it had been pursuing and set the tone for a dominant finish.

Lawrence doubled its advantage in the 55th minute when an own goal made it 2-0. The Vikings continued to create chances as the half wore on, adding a third goal in the 79th minute when Elena Hartung finished a setup from Ava Elders.

Hartung then turned provider less than five minutes later. In the 83rd minute, she assisted Caroline Cody for Lawrence's fourth goal, capping the scoring and completing the Vikings' second-half surge.

The final numbers reflected Lawrence's control. The Vikings finished with 32 shots, including 16 on target, and earned 11 corner kicks. Cornell did not record a shot or a shot on goal, meaning Lawrence's goalkeepers were not called upon to make a save.

Lawrence's pressure was especially evident in the transition from the first half to the second. After being held off the scoreboard despite numerous chances before the break, the Vikings scored four times in the final 45 minutes to secure the shutout.

The victory improved Lawrence to 8-1-5 overall and 4-1-1 in Midwest Conference play. The Vikings combined relentless attacking pressure with a defensive performance that kept Cornell from generating a single shot throughout the match.
