Vikings comeback falls short versus Pioneers

APPLETON, Wis. — Lawrence University (10-9, 3-7 Midwest Conference) fell to Grinnell College (15-3, 10-1 Midwest Conference) 88-75 on Saturday at Alexander Gym. The Vikings connected on 10 of 15 attempts from beyond the arc but were unable to overcome the Pioneers' 44 points off the bench.

Lawrence initiated the game with a strong start, taking an early lead through a 3-pointer by Nicholas Gouriotis and a jumper from Jackson Weber. The team maintained momentum with key defensive plays, including two blocks by Casey Schoenecker, contributing to a 9–0 run that positioned them ahead 11–2 at the 14:12 mark.

However, Grinnell responded with a series of fast breaks and perimeter shooting, regaining the lead with a 3-pointer by Kai Te Huki. Despite the Vikings' efforts to reclaim the advantage, including a 3-pointer by Hogan Demovsky, Grinnell finished the half on a scoring surge, capitalizing on turnovers to extend their lead. The first half concluded with Lawrence trailing 39–28.

The second half began with Grinnell maintaining their momentum, but the Vikings responded with a strong showing. Caleb Nash's rebound and assist led to a 3-pointer by Demovsky, cutting into the early deficit. Despite Grinnell's continued scoring, CJ Campbell's layup kept Lawrence within striking distance.

The Vikings continued to battle, with Gouriotis making key contributions. A series of free throws and a 3-pointer from Gouriotis narrowed the gap, while the team capitalized on turnovers to add fastbreak points. However, the Pioneers countered with timely 3-pointers to maintain their edge.

As the half progressed, Campbell hit a crucial 3-pointer with just over five minutes remaining, bringing the Vikings closer. Gouriotis further fueled the effort with consecutive baskets, as Lawrence attempted to close the gap. Despite their efforts, Grinnell extended their lead with a series of 3 point makes to hold off the comeback efforts of the Vikings and secure the road win.Ā
