RHINELANDER, Wis. (Hodag Dome) ā The Lawrence University softball team opened its 2026 season in emphatic fashion Wednesday afternoon, erupting for 10 runs in a 10-2 victory over Edgewood College in nonconference action.
After settling into the contest early, the Vikings broke things open with a dominant stretch across the middle innings, combining timely extra-base hits and aggressive base running to take control of their season opener.
Edgewood struck first with a solo home run in the fourth inning, but Lawrence answered immediately. In the bottom half of the frame, Shelby Rozak lined a ground-rule double to right field to score Gillian Guerriero and even the score at 1-1, swinging the momentum back toward the Vikings.
Lawrence took command in the fifth inning. With runners aboard, Callie Rozak delivered the biggest swing of the afternoon, roping a three-RBI double to center field to plate Guerriero, Anitza Gutierrez and Zoe Doherty and give the Vikings a 4-1 advantage.
The Vikings put the game out of reach in the sixth inning, sending runs across in a six-run outburst. Adrie Villa scored on an Edgewood miscue before Doherty added an RBI single. Gutierrez drew a bases-loaded walk to extend the lead, and Guerriero followed with a ground-rule double that cleared the bases. Lillian Guidry capped the rally with an RBI fielder's choice, giving Lawrence a commanding 10-1 cushion.
Edgewood added a run in the top of the sixth, but the Vikings remained in control from start to finish after their offensive surge.
In the circle, Avery Chilson delivered a strong performance to earn the win in the season opener, working five innings and allowing two runs (one earned) while scattering six hits and striking out three. Georgia Sedlack closed out the contest with a scoreless inning of relief.
Lawrence totaled a balanced offensive effort, highlighted by clutch extra-base hits from Shelby Rozak, Callie Rozak and Gillian Guerriero, as the Vikings opened the 2026 campaign with an impressive statement victory.
