MOUNT VERNON, Iowa — Lawrence (11-10, 4-8 Midwest Conference) fell to Cornell College (4-17, 3-9 Midwest Conference) with a final score of 90-65 on Saturday at the Small Athletic and Wellness Center.Â
Lawrence opened the first half with a 3-pointer by
CJ Campbell, assisted by
Caleb Nash, to gain an early lead. Despite moments of strong defense and rebounding efforts, including nine offensive rebounds, Lawrence struggled with shooting efficiency, hitting only 8 of 29 field goals.
Nicholas Gouriotis contributed significantly with two 3-pointers and an additional layup, keeping the Vikings competitive.
Cornell responded with a series of 3-pointers, gaining momentum midway through the half. Lawrence managed to stay within reach by converting 7 of 8 free throws and maintaining their presence in the paint with eight points. As the half closed, Lawrence trailed Cornell 38-27, needing to improve their shooting accuracy in the next half to close the gap.
Lawrence opened the second half with a layup by
Casey Schoenecker, narrowing the gap to 29-38. However, Cornell responded with a series of three-pointers, extending their lead to 48-31 by the 15:42 mark. Schoenecker's scoring efforts in the paint kept Lawrence competitive, contributing multiple layups to keep the deficit manageable.
As the half progressed, Lawrence found momentum through Gouriotis, who contributed a timely three-pointer and layup. Despite this, Cornell continued to capitalize on their opportunities beyond the arc, maintaining a significant lead. Lawrence's defensive efforts were highlighted by a block from Gouriotis, but Cornell's scoring depth proved challenging.
In the closing minutes, Lawrence showcased resilience with contributions from

Henry Jensen, who added crucial points in the paint. Despite these efforts, Cornell maintained control with their perimeter shooting, and the half concluded with Cornell leading 90-65 securing the win.Â
