APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University women's lacrosse team showed early momentum and a strong late push Saturday afternoon but ultimately fell to Franklin College 14–10 at Banta Bowl.
Lawrence opened the contest with a strong first quarter, jumping out to an early lead behind quick offensive execution. Emma Perry scored the game's first goal before Sophia Labrecque added another just seconds later to give the Vikings a 2–0 advantage. Perry later found the net again, and Savannah Larsen capped the quarter with a goal in the final minute to put Lawrence ahead 4–3 after the opening period.
Franklin responded in the second quarter, scoring three goals to take a 6–4 lead heading into halftime.
The Vikings continued to battle in the third quarter. Larsen opened the period with a goal assisted by Emmerson Berger, and Bella Krull-Collins added another shortly after to keep Lawrence within reach as the teams traded goals.
Franklin gained separation late in the third quarter, but Lawrence refused to back down. The Vikings mounted a late push in the fourth quarter with Larsen scoring twice and Annika Solberg adding a goal during a man-up opportunity. Sophia Labrecque added another goal in the closing seconds to round out the Lawrence scoring.
Larsen led the Vikings offensively with four goals and an assist, while Labrecque and Perry each added two goals. Krull-Collins and Solberg also found the net for Lawrence.
Defensively, goalkeeper Neva Mertsching recorded 15 saves while helping keep the Vikings within striking distance throughout the contest.
