Grinnell, Iowa — The Lawrence University baseball team picked up a strong Midwest Conference road win on Sunday, defeating Grinnell College 4-2 behind timely hitting and a solid effort on the mound.Â
Lawrence (8-19, 4-6 MWC) wasted no time setting the tone, striking for two runs in the top of the first inning. Steven Baudendistel worked a walk and came around to score on an RBI single from Sage Beebe-Jenny, who later scored on a CJ Filipek RBI double to give the Vikings an early 2-0 lead.Â
After Grinnell answered with a solo home run in the second, the Vikings responded again in the third inning. Beebe-Jenny singled and eventually scored on Filipek's second RBI double of the game, and Ben Gutowski followed with an RBI single to extend the lead to 4-1.Â
Grinnell trimmed the deficit to 4-2 in the fourth, but that would be all the offense the hosts could muster against Lawrence pitching.
Conner Robertson earned the win on the mound, going four innings while allowing two runs on four hits and striking out one. Nick Katz closed the door over the final two innings, tossing two scoreless frames to secure the save and preserve the victory.Â
Offensively, Filipek led the way with a 2-for-3 performance and two RBIs, both coming on doubles. Beebe-Jenny also had a big day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored, an RBI, and three stolen bases. Gutowski added a hit and an RBI, while Lawrence's aggressive baserunning helped generate pressure throughout the game with multiple stolen bases.Â
The Vikings finished with six hits and drew four walks, capitalizing on key opportunities early to build a lead they would not relinquish.
