Appleton, Wis. — Lawrence University dropped a 5-2 match to Carthage on Thursday at the LU Courts.
The Vikings opened the day by earning the doubles point with wins at the top two spots. Anna Vanden Acker and Logan Kane posted a 6-3 victory at No. 1 doubles over Rya Arreazola and Greta Peterson, and Clara Hills and Sky Shinohara followed with a 6-4 win at No. 2 over Niki Manjlovic and M. Voss. Carthage claimed No. 3 doubles, 6-2, against Rachael Pofahl and Sue Vacek.
Clara Hills led the way in singles play for Lawrence with a strong three-set performance at No. 1. Hills took the opening set in a tiebreak, 7-6, followed with a 6-1 second-set win, and secured the match with a 7-2 victory in the deciding match tiebreak over Rya Arreazola.
At No. 2 singles, Anna Vanden Acker also battled in a tightly contested match in her final collegiate appearance. Vanden Acker fell 6-4 in the opening set and pushed the second set to a 6-6 score before dropping the tiebreak, 7-6. The match ultimately came down to a deciding tiebreak, where she narrowly fell 9-7 to Greta Peterson.
Logan Kane fell 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles, Rachael Pofahl was defeated 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4, Sky Shinohara dropped a 6-0, 6-1 decision at No. 5, and Madelena Priest fell 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6.
Lawrence also said goodbye to one of its leaders on Thursday as Anna Vanden Acker competed in the final match of her collegiate career. A fierce competitor, Vanden Acker made her mark through her work ethic, ability to rise in pressure moments, and her dedication to the team. She embodied the spirit of loving to battle, embracing every challenge and never backing down from a moment. Vanden Acker leaves a lasting mark on the program, and the Vikings thank her for her leadership, commitment, and everything she has given to Lawrence women's tennis.
