Vikings Drop Pair of Tight One-Run Battles at Beloit

Beloit, Wisconsin — Lawrence battled in a tightly contested doubleheader on Saturday but came up just short in both games against Beloit, falling 4-3 in Game 1 and 4-3 in extra innings in Game 2.

In Game 1, the Vikings put together a strong offensive showing, matching Beloit with 11 hits. Lawrence jumped out early, getting on the board in the second inning when William Zatkowski delivered an RBI single to score Ben Gutowski. The Vikings added to their lead in the fourth on Nathan Depew's RBI single and made it 3-1 in the fifth on a heads-up steal of home by Steven Baudendistel.

On the mound, Ari Smolar-Eisenberg gave Lawrence a solid start, allowing just two runs over 5.2 innings. The bullpen kept things in check into the late innings, but Beloit rallied in the ninth, using a two-RBI single to walk off the Vikings, 4-3.

Game 2 followed a similar script, with Lawrence again right in the mix from start to finish. After falling behind early, the Vikings capitalized on Beloit miscues in the sixth inning to take a 2-1 lead. Sage Beebe-Jenny sparked the offense with aggressive baserunning, eventually scoring, while CJ Filipek came across on a wild pitch to give Lawrence the advantage.

The Vikings added another run in the ninth to reclaim a 3-2 lead, but Beloit responded with a game-tying triple in the bottom half. In extra innings, Beloit used a sacrifice fly in the 10th to secure the 4-3 win.

Nathan Zumbrunnen was sharp in Game 2, striking out eight over six innings while allowing just one run, but the Vikings couldn't hold off Beloit late
