Vikings Ride Strong Pitching and Timely Hitting to Victory

Appleton, Wisconsin — The Lawrence University baseball team used timely hitting and strong pitching to pull away for a 7-2 victory over Illinois College on Friday afternoon at Whiting Field.

After trailing early, the Vikings settled in and took control in the middle innings. Lawrence broke through in the sixth inning, plating three runs to take the lead before adding three more insurance runs in the eighth to put the game out of reach.

Lawrence totaled 11 hits on the day, led by Ben Gutowski, who delivered a perfect 4-for-4 performance at the plate. Sage Beebe-Jenny added a big day offensively, going 2-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while AJ Desantiago drove in two runs.

Behind the offense, Nathan Zumbrunnen turned in a strong outing on the mound, tossing eight innings while allowing just two runs on six hits and striking out four. Malachi Ross came on in relief to close out the ninth inning and secure the win.

The Vikings capitalized on Illinois College miscues and delivered in key moments, using a balanced effort at the plate and on the mound to earn the victory.
