Vikings offense explodes in Game 1 versus Redhawks

RIPON, Wis. — Lawrence University defeated Ripon College 20–13 on Wednesday at Francis Field, amassing 17 hits and seven doubles in the process. The Vikings' offensive performance included three home runs and 10 walks, contributing to their high-scoring victory.

Lawrence and Ripon ended the first inning scoreless as both teams' defenses held firm. In the second inning, the Vikings opened the scoring when CJ Filipek scored on a flyout by Ben Gutowski. Steven Baudendistel later scored on a throwing error, bringing the score to 2–0. The Red Hawks answered with two runs of their own, tying the game at 2–2 at the end of the second inning.

In the third inning, Sage Beebe-Jenny scored from second on a single by CJ Filipek. Later, Nathan Depew's double cleared the bases, adding three more runs to the Vikings' total. Ripon responded with three runs of its own, but Lawrence led 7–5 after three innings.

Lawrence extended its lead in the fourth inning when Ben Gutowski hit a three-run homer, making the score 10–5. Ripon managed to push across one run, ending the inning with Lawrence up 10–6. Lawrence's momentum continued in the fifth inning as CJ Filipek hit a three-run homer, increasing the lead to 13–6. Ripon was held scoreless in the bottom of the inning.

In the sixth inning, Lawrence added five more runs, highlighted by a two-run double from Nathan Depew and a two-run homer by Sage Beebe-Jenny. Ripon responded with three runs, but Lawrence held an 18–9 lead. Ripon closed the gap slightly in the seventh inning with two unearned runs, but Lawrence maintained an 18–11 advantage.

The Vikings added another unearned run in the eighth inning after Sage Beebe-Jenny scored on a passed ball, while Ripon scored twice to bring the score to 19–13. In the ninth inning, Nathan Depew doubled and scored on a single by Myles Brincks, sealing a 20–13 victory for Lawrence.
