Appleton, Wisconsin – Lawrence split a Midwest Conference doubleheader with Beloit on Sunday, taking Game 1, 3-2, before falling 9-1 in Game 2.
Game 1 – Lawrence 3, Beloit 2
Lawrence rode a dominant performance from Avery Chilson and a record-setting day on the bases from Anitza Gutierrez to open the doubleheader with a hard-fought victory.
Chilson was in complete control in the circle, tossing a complete game while allowing just three hits and striking out 12. She consistently worked out of traffic and shut down Beloit's lineup, holding the Buccaneers to just two runs—both unearned—while delivering one of her strongest outings of the season.Â
Offensively, Gutierrez set the tone early. After reaching base in the first inning, she swiped second and third, with those steals pushing her into the single-season program record for stolen bases, marking a historic moment for the junior.Â
Lawrence capitalized shortly after, taking a 1-0 lead in the opening inning. Beloit responded with two runs in the sixth to briefly take the lead, but the Vikings answered immediately. Callie Rozak reached to spark the inning before Isabella Alfaro delivered a clutch RBI triple to tie the game. Chilson followed by helping her own cause with a go-ahead RBI groundout, putting Lawrence back in front 3-2.Â
Ava Pilgrim added two hits for the Vikings as Lawrence held on behind Chilson's dominant finish.
Game 2 – Beloit 9, Lawrence 1
In the nightcap, Beloit seized momentum early and never let go, using a multi-inning offensive surge to secure the split.
Beloit plated two runs in the third inning and added three more in the fourth to build separation before breaking the game open with a four-run sixth inning.Â
Lawrence's lone run came in the sixth when Lillian Guidry drove in Gillian Guerriero with an RBI single after Guerriero reached and moved into scoring position.Â
Pilgrim again paced the offense with two hits, while Guerriero added a double and scored the team's only run in the loss.Â
