Lawrence Duo Headed to Fencing World Championships in Hong Kong

APPLETON, Wis. – Two members of the Lawrence University fencing team will compete on the international stage this summer after being selected by their respective countries to participate in the Fencing World Championships, set for July 22-26 at AsiaWorld-Expo in Hong Kong.

Rising sophomores Reya Farlam and Zaky Obeid earned spots at one of the sport's most prestigious events following standout first seasons with the Vikings. Farlam will represent Great Britain in Women's Épée, while Obeid will compete for Lebanon in Men's Sabre.

The selections place both student-athletes among the top fencers from their respective nations and provide an opportunity to compete against elite international competition on the world stage.

"Lawrence Fencing is proud to have two athletes competing at this event," said Lawrence head coach Eric Momberg. "Both Reya and Zaky exhibit a high degree of work ethic and motivate their teammates on and off the fencing strip. Their hard work and dedication to the sport has lead them to this opportunity and we are proud to have them represent the Lawrence program abroad. We are excited for their opportunity and looking forward to their return for the 26/27 fencing season."

Farlam and Obeid recently completed their first year of competition with the Vikings and have quickly established themselves as key contributors within the Lawrence program. Their selections to the World Championships reflect not only their individual accomplishments, but also the continued growth and success of Lawrence Fencing on the international level.

The World Championships will bring together the best fencers from around the globe in Hong Kong, offering Farlam and Obeid a chance to showcase their skills while representing both their countries and Lawrence University.

Lawrence Athletics wishes both student-athletes the best of luck as they prepare to compete at the Fencing World Championships and looks forward to welcoming them back for the 2026-27 season.
