Vikings Battle Lake Forest in 3-1 Setback
APPLETON, Wis. — Lawrence University men's soccer battled Lake Forest College for 90 minutes Tuesday night at the Banta Bowl, but the Foresters scored twice in the second half to pull away for a 3-1 victory.
Lake Forest opened the scoring in the 19th minute when Gustavo Machado converted a penalty kick. Lawrence answered less than eight minutes later, as Colt Johnson scored his first goal of the season off an assist from Juchan Yang to bring the match level at 1-1.
The Vikings created several chances throughout the opening half, with Daito Sho putting two shots toward goal and Grayson Ogren forcing an early save from Lake Forest goalkeeper Andrew Swacha. Lawrence entered halftime tied with the Foresters at 1-1.
Lawrence continued to control possession after the break, but Lake Forest broke through in the 68th minute when Rocky Rabago scored to give the Foresters a 2-1 advantage.
The Vikings continued to push for an equalizer, with Issac Newcomb and Sho providing chances in the second half. Lawrence goalkeeper Cristian Puebla also kept the Vikings within striking distance, finishing with three saves.
Lake Forest added a third goal in the 82nd minute when Machado scored his second of the night.
Lawrence finished with eight shots, putting five on target, while Lake Forest recorded 13 shots with six on goal. The Vikings held a 59 percent possession advantage and earned three corner kicks.
Sho led the Vikings with three shots, including two on target. Newcomb added two shots, while Johnson, Ogren and several other Vikings also recorded attempts.
