Lawrence University celebrates Black History Month each February, and the university has a long history of Black athletes making an impact for the Vikings. Joe Patterson of the class of 1970 was the first Black athlete to be inducted into the Lawrence Intercollegiate Athletic Hall of Fame, and his life accomplishments and dedication and service to Lawrence are the stuff of legend. From Patterson's legacy to the recent accomplishments of women's basketball star Kenya Earl of the class of 2022, Lawrence's Black student-athletes serve as a beacon of promise for the Vikings.
