ST. PETER, Minn. -- The Lawrence University men's hockey team pulled away in the second period Friday and rolled to a 5-2 nonconference win over Gustavus Adolphus College in the season opener at Don Roberts Rink.
    Five different players scored for the Vikings, and Davis Kirkendall, Kyle Gierman and Ivan Galaguzov all had a goal and an assist for Lawrence.
    Alex Mosquera made 38 saves to earn the victory for Lawrence, and Justin Damon took the loss while stopping 21 shots for the Gusties.
    Lawrence got on the board at the 8:15 mark of the first period when Kirkendall scored off assists by Tyler Jensen and Curtis Weyerhaeuser. The Vikings then cashed in on the power play for a 2-0 lead when Gierman scored his first collegiate goal at the 12:11 mark with Galaguzov and rookie Dante Terramani collecting assists.
    Gustavus cut the lead to 2-1 midway through the second period, but Lawrence got two goals in just over three minutes to build the advantage.
    Galaguzov scored at the 13:19 mark of the second off assists from Kirkendall and Gierman for a 3-1 edge. Vincent Dekumbis then made it 4-1 at 16:29 when he scored off assists from Oliver DeCroock and Zach Lodes.
    The Gusties trimmed the lead to 4-2 just 1:27 into the third period, but Zack Olen answered for the Vikings just 22 seconds later to push the lead back to three.
    Lawrence finished 1-for-5 on the power play, and Gustauvs was 0-for-2. 
    Lawrence goes for the series sweep at Gustavus on Saturday night.
