Vikings roll past Marian

APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University women's basketball team had four players score in double figures as the Vikings pounded Marian University 84-38 in a nonconference game Thursday at Alexander Gymnasium.
Lawrence jumped out to a 12-point lead after the first quarter and never looked back. The Vikings led 44-21 at the half and the lead grew to as much as 46 points.
The Vikings (1-1) put the clamps on defensively as well as they held Marian (0-2) to 24.5 percent shooting (12-49) from the floor. The 38 points in the lowest total allowed by the Vikings since Riley Woldt took over as head coach for the 2018-19 season. The previous low was 39 in a 53-39 victory over Beloit College on Dec. 7, 2019.
Kenya Earl led the Vikings and all scorers with 14 points and she added a game-high eight rebounds. Rookie forward Mallory Meyer added 13 points, four steals, three assists and a pair of rebounds for Lawrence.
Karina Herrera came off the bench for the Vikings with 12 points on 6-for-7 shooting from the floor, and rookie guard Caroline Sharp added 10 points and four rebounds.
Lyla Bartol had nine points to lead Marian.
The Vikings got off to a strong start and scored nine consecutive points, capped by a pair of Sharp free throws, to lead 11-2. The Vikings led 18-6 after the opening quarter when Earl hit a buzzer-beater in the lane.
Lawrence had built the lead to 18 late in the second quarter when the Vikings scored the final five points of the period, capped by Lydia Lueck's steal and jumper before the horn sounded for a 44-21 edge.
The Vikings steadily built the lead in the third quarter to as many as 39 points at 68-29 on Delaney Brooks' 3-pointer. Lawrence's lead hovered in the 40-point range for much of the fourth quarter as everyone got in on the action for the Vikings.
Lawrence rookie Lexi Schofield notched her first collegiate point as did sophomore Ava Hillman as 10 Vikings got into the scoring column.
Lawrence returns to action on Saturday when the Vikings host Rockford University at Alexander Gymnasium.
