MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- The Lawrence University men's hockey team got goals late in each of the first two periods Saturday and outstanding goaltending to earn a 2-1 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association win over MSOE at the Kern Center.
Lawrence scored in the final seconds of the opening period and got a goal late in the second period and then rode the play of
Alex Mosquera to pick up the win.
Mosquera stopped 53 shots for the Vikings as he made 15 saves in the opening period, 13 in the second and 25 in the final period.Â
Lawrence (3-4-0, 1-3-0 NCHA) got on the board after MSOE's Ryan Vlaisavljevich was sent off for tripping with 1:21 left in the first period. Lawrence cashed in on the power play when
Brandon Halvorsen scored off assists from
Zack Olen and
Zach Lodes with just 1.9 seconds remaining in the period for a 1-0 lead.
Lawrence went 1-for-5 on the power play, and MSOE (2-2-2, 1-2-1) was 0-for-6.
The score stayed that way until late in the second period when Oliver DeCrook beat MSOE goaltender Nick Stofcheck with 2:27 left for a 2-0 advantage. Stofcheck finished with 22 saves on the night.
The Raiders cut the lead in half when Garrett Gintoli scored at the 11:19 mark to make it 2-1. MSOE pulled Stofcheck with less than two minutes left and had an extra attacker on the ice for 1:35 but couldn't get the equalizer. Lawrence forced a face-off in the MSOE end with 13 seconds left so the Raiders were forced to put Stofcheck back in the game.Â
MSOE got one final chance when they got a face-off in the Lawrence zone with two seconds remaining, but the Vikings were able to kill off the final few ticks to secure the victory.
Lawrence returns to action on Tuesday when the Vikings host Saint Mary's University in a nonconference game.
