PLYMOUTH, Wis. -- A pair of late turnovers proved costly for the Lawrence University men's basketball team Friday in a 78-74 nonconference loss to Lakeland University at Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Vikings turned it over twice in the final 45 seconds, and that allowed Lakeland to hang on for the victory.
  Sophomore forward
Adnan Sarancic recorded his first career double-double as he led the Vikings with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Sarancic hit 10-of-16 shots from the floor and picked up a pair of assists.
 Â
Brad Sendell added 19 points for the Vikings, and
Kyle Lillwitz came off the bench to hit three 3-pointers on his way to 15 points.
Brandon Danowski handed out a game-high six assists and grabbed 10 rebounds for Lawrence (4-6).Â
The game was tied 35-35 at the half, and the Vikings went on an 11-4 burst early in the half. Sarancic had six points during the run,
Matthew Kaznikov drained a 3-pointer and Sendell finished the outburst with a pair of free throws to put Lawrence up 52-45 with 14:36 remaining.
Lakeland (6-4) chipped away at the lead and gradually built an eight-point advantage. The Vikings trailed 73-65 before a Sarancic layup cut the margin to six points. After a Lakeland turnover, Danowski scored on a driving layup to trim the lead to 73-69 with 2:55 left.
After a Lakeland miss, Kaznikov buried a 3-pointer with 2:08 remaining to cut the lead to 73-72. The Muskies got a layup, but Sendell countered with a layup and Lakeland led 75-74.Â
Following a pair of Lakeland misses, Lawrence had a chance to take the lead, but the Muskies turned up the defensive pressure and forced a turnover with 45 seconds left. Cam Jaeger then converted a pair of free throws to give Lakeland a 77-74 lead with 16 seconds left. Needing a 3-pointer to tie, the Vikings turned the ball over with 10 seconds remaining, and Lakeland made one free throw with six seconds left to seal the win.
Aidan Polzin led the Muskies with 20 points.
Lawrence returns to action on Saturday when the Vikings host UW-Superior at Alexander Gymnasium.Â
