APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University men's hockey team gave up three second-period goals Saturday, and Marian University went on to a 5-1 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association victory at the Appleton Family Ice Center.
Marian also retained possession of the Battle of Highway 41 trophy as the Sabres won a shootout 2-1.
Marian (4-5-0, 3-1-0 NCHA) led 1-0 after the opening period, but the Vikings were whistled for four penalties in a span of less than six minutes in the second period. That turned the tide as Marian took advantage of the power-play chances.
Mateo Albinati scored on a two-man advantage at the 8:53 mark for a 2-0 lead. Blaine Caton added a power-play goal at 12:41, and Ty Mosimann scored on the man-advantage at 14:27 for a 4-0 advantage. Marian finished 3-for-8 on the power play, and Lawrence was 1-for-6.
Lawrence (2-2-0, 2-2-0) got on the board when
Davis Kirkendall scored on the power play. He redirected
Kyle Gierman's blast from the point into the net at the 15:59 mark of the second. Lawrence nearly scored again after the Sabres were whistled for another penalty late in the period, but the Vikings trailed 4-1 after two.
Ty Enns scored early in the third for Marian to complete the scoring.
 Â
Brian Tallieu finished with 46 saves for Lawrence, and Colby Muise had 13 in a relief role to get the win.
Since the teams split the two-game series, it went to a shootout to determine who would take home the traveling trophy. Marian scored on each of first two shots, and
Oliver DeCroock scored as Lawrence's second shooter. The Vikings couldn't connect on any of their final three shots, and Marian held on to the trophy.
