Vikings power past Minnesota Morris for sweep

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The Lawrence University baseball team powered to a nonconference sweep of the University of Minnesota Morris on Friday at US Bank Stadium.
Lawrence rolled to a 16-2 victory in five innings in the opener and scored late in the nightcap to pull away for a 7-3 win over the Cougars.
In the opener, Lawrence (5-1) pounded out 17 hits and scored eight times in the fifth inning to end the game early.
Spenser Ross went 3-for-5 and scored three runs for the Vikings, and Luke Miles, Clayton Agler, Quinn Berglin, Elden Santana, Mitchell Sandleback and Jacob Charon all had two hits. Agler homered and drove in a team-high three runs, and Stephaune Haylock, Sandleback and Charon all drove in a pair of runs.
Henry Sipchen pitched two innings of scoreless relief to earn his first collegiate victory for the Vikings. He struck out one and walked a pair.
Lawrence got on the board early when it scored four times in the top of the first. Ross doubled to score Miles for the game's first run, and Agler followed with a run-scoring single. Haylock then smacked a two-run triple for a 4-0 edge.
Morris (0-4) trimmed the lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the second, but Lawrence added three runs in the third as Santana and Charon both collected run-scoring doubles to push the advantage to 7-2. Berglin then singled to score Ross in the fourth and Lawrence led 8-2.
The Vikings exploded for eight runs in the fifth as Lawrence sent 14 batters to the plate. Charon picked up his second RBI double of the game to score Sandleback, and Miles followed with a run-scoring triple for a 10-2 lead. After Ross singled, Agler blasted a two-run homer and Lawrence led 13-2. Ethan Plantz and Sandleback both added run-scoring singles later in the inning to push the margin to 14 runs.
In the second game, it took a few innings for the Lawrence bats to get going, but the Vikings won it with a pair of big innings.
Preston Anderson went 2-for-2 with a triple and three runs batted in for the Vikings, and Charon was 2-for-2 with two doubles and two runs scored. Santana came on in relief in the top of the sixth to shut down a rally and then worked a scoreless seventh for his first collegiate victory. Three Lawrence pitchers combined to allow only three hits.
Morris got single runs in the first and third for a 2-0 edge, but Lawrence rallied to take the lead in the fourth. Agler started the rally with a one-out walk, and Berglin followed with a run-scoring double to cut the lead to 2-1. Charon followed with a double to score Berglin and the game was tied 2-2. Plantz later picked up a two-out, RBI single to score Charon and Lawrence led 3-2.
The Cougars manufactured a run in the top of the sixth without a hit to tie the game at 3-3, but the Vikings immediately took the lead back.
Charon started the sixth with a double, and Haylock followed with a walk. After a sacrifice bunt and a walk loaded the bases, Anderson stepped to the plate and hammered a three-run triple to put Lawrence up 6-3. Miles followed with a single to put Lawrence ahead 7-3.
Santana worked a perfect seventh to nail down the victory. Santana didn't allow a hit, struck out one and walked one in 1.1 innings.
Lawrence returns to action on Tuesday when the Vikings travel to Knox College for a nonconference doubleheader.
