Vikings rally for win over Finlandia and series sweep

HANCOCK, Mich. -- The Lawrence University men's hockey team rallied from a two-goal deficit Saturday to post a 5-2 win over Finlandia University in a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association game at Houghton County Arena.
The victory in the regular-season finale moved Lawrence into third place in the North Division, and the Vikings will face Marian University in a NCHA quarterfinal seres to open the playoffs.
Lawrence (4-4-0, 4-4-0 NCHA) was down 2-0 after the opening period, but the Vikings scored three times in the second and twice more early in the third for the victory.
Finlandia (1-7-0, 1-7-0) built its lead on a short-handed goal and a power-play tally in the first, but Lawrence sliced into that lead early in the second period. Tyler Jensen scored off assists from Will Robertson and Kevin Quirk just 2:34 into the second to trim the margin to 2-1.
Finlandia's Cooper Hoheisel was also whistled for a five-minute major for high sticking and got a game misconduct after the Lawrence goal. That put the Vikings on the power play, and Lawrence cashed in when Davis Kirkendall scored on the man-advantage at the 5:33 mark with assists going to Kyle Gierman and Oliver DeCroock.
The game wasn't tied for long as Lawrence scored again at the 11:06 mark to take a 3-2 lead. Brandon Halvorsen scored his third goal of the season with assists from Curtis Weyerhaeuser and Joe Cavil to put the Vikings ahead to stay. That was the end of the night for Finlandia goaltender Marcus Gloss, who finished with 17 saves.
Lawrence sealed the win early in the third period. James Scott scored just nine seconds into the third period off a pass from Maxim Plekhov to put the Vikings ahead 4-2. Robertson then made it 5-2 when he scored at the 4:04 mark off assists from Jensen and Gierman.
Brian Tallieu made 17 saves to pick up the win for Lawrence, and Joe Benedetto played the final 5:10 for the Vikings and recorded a pair of saves. Lawrence finished with a 39-21 edge in shots.
