Vikings open season with split against Wisconsin Lutheran

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The Lawrence University baseball team opened its season Sunday with a nonconference doubleheader split with Wisconsin Lutheran College at US Bank Stadium.
The Vikings won the opener 10-3, and Wisconsin Lutheran pulled out the nightcap 5-4.
In the first game, Lawrence took the lead in the bottom of the fifth and broke the game open with six runs in the sixth.
Spenser Ross went 2-for-4, scored three runs and drove in a run to lead the Vikings. Rookies Luke Miles and Elden Santana both drove in a pair of runs for Lawrence (1-1). Nick Guzzo worked two scoreless innings to collect the victory for the Vikings.
Lawrence trailed 2-0 early, but the Vikings got single runs in the second and third to tie it. Santana started the rally in the second with a triple and later scored on an error. Ross singled with two outs in the third, but an error allowed him to later score and tie the game.
The Warriors grabbed a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth, but Lawrence dodged a major bullet in the inning. With a run in and the bases loaded with no outs, Guzzo came in got three popups on the infield to escape any further damage.
The Vikings came right back to take the lead in the bottom half of the fifth. A pair of walks helped start the rally, and Miles later came in to score on a wild pitch to tie the game at 3-3. Two more walks loaded the bases, and Santana drew a bases-loaded walk to put Lawrence up 4-3.
The Vikings broke out in the sixth as Stephaune Haylock started the rally with a triple, and Ethan Plantz followed with a walk. Miles then tripled to score both runners and give Lawrence a 6-3 lead. Mitchell Sandleback followed with a single to score Miles for a 7-3 edge. After Ross' single scored Sandleback, Clayton Agler popped the third triple of the inning to score Ross for a 9-3 lead. Santana's sacrifice fly scored Agler to complete the outburst.
In the nightcap, Lawrence rallied late but came up just short. Both teams were limited to five hits apiece, but Quinn Berglin blasted a two-run homer for the Vikings.
Ross delivered a run-scoring single in the third to put the Vikings up 1-0, but Wisconsin Lutheran scored four times in the fourth and once more in the fifth to take a 5-1 lead.
Lawrence trimmed the margin to 5-3 in the sixth after Agler walked and Berglin followed with a blast over the left field fence. Lawrence rallied again in the seventh when Agler's two-out double scored Sandleback to cut the lead to 5-4. The Warriors then got the final out to secure the win.
Lawrence returns to action on March 13 when the Vikings face Northland College in a nonconference doubleheader in Ashwaubenon, Wis.
