BELOIT, Wis. -- Lawrence University standout
Amanda Karnatz broke the school's career hits record Saturday as the Vikings split a Midwest Conference doubleheader at Beloit College.
Karnatz collected two hits in the opener and added another in the second game and now has 186 for her career. That breaks the mark of 184 set by Lawrence Hall of Famer Jenny Burris from 2001-04.
In the opener, Karnatz went 2-for-3 with a double, scored two runs and drove in a pair for the Vikings (6-16, 5-9 MWC).
Ceara Larson went 3-for-4 for Lawrence, and
Mikayla Jeneske and
Emilia Jackson had two hits apiece.
Jackson went the distance in the circle to earn the victory. She allowed seven hits, struck out three and walked four as she outdueled Beloit ace Maddy Pfortmiller.
Lawrence got things started in the first when Karnatz led off the game with a single and later came in to score on Jackson's sacrifice fly. Beloit (16-14, 7-9) grabbed the lead back with two runs in the bottom of the first, but the lead didn't last long.
The Vikings struck for three runs in the top of the second as
Mary Boyle started the rally with a walk.
Chapin Grumhaus followd with a double to put runners at second and third. After a pair of outs, Karnatz smacked a two-run double to give Lawrence a 3-2 lead.
Lizzy Angemi followed with a single to score Karnatz and Lawrence led 4-2.
Beloit trimmed the lead to 4-3 in the fourth, but Jackson worked out of jam in the sixth to keep Lawrence ahead. After the first two hitters reached on errors, Jackson retired the next three batters in the sixth to close out the inning. She then worked around a two-out single in the seventh to seal the win.
In the second game, Lawrence was limited to just four hits but held a 3-1 lead heading to the bottom of the seventh.
The Vikings trailed 1-0 before striking for three runs in the sixth. Karnatz reached on error and Angemi walked to get things started. Larson followed with a single to score Karnatz and the game was tied 1-1.Â
After a Jeneske sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third, Angemi scored on a wild pitch for a 2-1 lead. Larson then scored on a throwing error by catcher Kaitlynn Taft and the Vikings led 3-1.
Angemi, who made the start and had limited Beloit to just four hits through six-plus innings, ran into trouble in the seventh. With one out, she gave up three consecutive hits, and Beloit cut the lead to 3-2. After Jackson came on in relief, she walked Emily Stapay to load the bases. A fielder's choice and an error then allowed two more runs to score and give Beloit the win.
Lawrence wraps up its season with a doubleheader against Lake Forest College on May 9 at Whiting Field.
