Lawrence falls at Lake Forest

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The Lawrence University football team saw Lake Forest College pull away in the second half Saturday and post a 52-26 Midwest Conference victory at Farwell Field.

Receiver Cameron Wicks had a big day for the Vikings as he caught seven passes for 81 yards and a touchdown, and he returned a kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown. Quarterback D'Andre Weaver completed 28-of-51 passes for 287 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. Weaver completed passes to seven different receivers in the contest.

Linebacker Eder Bellegarde piled up 13 tackles, including 1.0 tackles for loss, and picked up a pass breakup to pace the Lawrence defense. Rookies Jacob Stanley and Ian Thomas both recorded their first career interceptions for Lawrence (1-1, 0-1 MWC).

Running back Damon Bonds paced Lake Forest (2-0, 1-0) with 12 carries for 145 yards and a touchdown. Lake Forest quarterback Tre Stewart was 22-of-36 for 331 yards, two touchdowns and a pair of interceptions.

Lawrence trailed 14-0 but Stanley's interception gave the Vikings the ball back at their own two-yard line. The Vikings put together a 10-play, 98-yard drive for a touchdown with Wicks and Tanner Morris catching multiple key passes in the march down the field. Wicks grabbed a 20-yard pass for a first down at the Lake Forest 11, and Morris caught a touchdown pass on the next play to trim the margin to 14-7 midway through the second quarter.

Lake Forest struck back with a touchdown and field goal and led 24-7 at the half. The Foresters pushed the lead to 31-7, but Wicks returned the ensuing kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown to trim the margin to 31-14. That is the fourth-longest kickoff return in Lawrence history.

The teams then traded touchdowns as the Vikings completed an 11-play, 68-yard drive with Weaver hitting Prince Mukuna for a one-yard touchdown to cut the lead to 38-20. Lawrence completed the scoring late in the game as Weaver completed six consecutive passes on a six-play, 66-yard scoring drive. Weaver connected with Wicks on a 27-yard touchdown pass with 1:39 remaining for the final margin.

Lawrence returns to action next Saturday when the Vikings travel to Grinnell College.
