Vikings fall in OT at Grinnell

GRINNELL, Iowa -- The Lawrence University football team scored 21 fourth-quarter points Saturday to tie the game, but Grinnell College scored on the first play of overtime and that was enough for a 35-28 Midwest Conference victory over the Vikings at Rosenbloom Field.
The Vikings trailed 28-7 before rattling off 21 consecutive points to tie the game at 28-28 with just 43 seconds remaining. A wild play to end regulation that resulted in another Lawrence touchdown was wiped away by a penalty.
Lawrence quarterback D'Andre Weaver completed 19-of-41 passes for 226 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. Tanner Morris caught seven passes for the Vikings (1-2, 0-2 MWC) for 95 yards and a touchdown. Lawrence's Cameron Wicks grabbed four passes for 72 yards and a pair of scores, and Logan Olson had four catches for 41 yards.
Three Lawrence players, Eder Bellegarde, Ian Thomas and Blake Sadusk, hit double digits in tackles. Sadusk had 11 stops, including 1.5 tackles for loss and a sack Bellegarde, who forced a fumble and recovered a fumble, and Thomas had 10 stops apiece. Donzell Andress piled up nine tackles for the Vikings, and that included 2.0 sacks.
Lawrence's lone first-half score came on Malachi Gatison's first touchdown for the Vikings as he ran it in from five yards out to cut Grinnell's lead to 14-7. The Pioneers (1-2, 1-1) led 21-7 at the half.
Lawrence started its comeback early in the fourth quarter when Weaver connected with Wicks on a 26-yard touchdown pass to complete a seven-play scoring drive that trimmed the lead to 28-14 with 11:18 left.
The Lawrence defense stopped Grinnell's next possession, and Terrell Myers field the ensuing punt at his own 12-yard line. Myers returned the punt 62 yards to the Grinnell 26-yard line to set up another score.
Weaver hit Morris for 12 yards on the next play and connected with Morris for 14 yards and a touchdown on the following play to cut the margin to 28-21 with 5:08 remaining.
Grinnell pushed the ensuing possession to the Lawrence 36, but the Pioneers chose not to punt on fourth down. Quarterback Grayson Woodhouse was sacked on the play, and Lawrence took over at the 36 with 1:31 remaining.
Weaver ran for 19 yards on the first play and then completed passes to Morris and Wicks to move to the Grinnell 27. Two plays later, Weaver found Wicks down the sideline for a 28-yard touchdown pass and the game was tied at 28-28 with 43 seconds left.
After three incompletions by Grinnell, Lawrence got the ball back with 15 seconds left at its own 42-yard line.
Weaver hit Olson for 12 yards to the Grinnell 46 on the first play and then found Wicks for 10 yards to the 36. The final play saw Weaver scramble before he heaved the ball toward Wicks, who hauled it in and dove into the end zone for what looked like the winning touchdown. Weaver was flagged for an illegal forward pass, and the play was wiped away.
Grinnell got the ball first in overtime, and the Pioneers threw a touchdown pass on the first play to take the lead. Lawrence got a pass interference penalty on the first play, and Weaver found Olson for nine yards on the next play. After Gatison ran for a first down to the Grinnell five-yard line, he was stopped for no gain on the next play. Three consecutive incompletions followed to give Grinnell the win.
Lawrence has a bye next week and returns to action on Oct. 2 when the Vikings host Monmouth College.
