APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University men's soccer team scored twice in a span of less than nine minutes Monday to carve out a 2-1 nonconference victory over Northland College on Ron Roberts Field at the Banta Bowl.
The Vikings (3-5-0) trailed midway through the second half before grabbing the lead with goals from
Elliot Mueller and
Sean McLaughlin.Â
The Lumberjacks scored at the 8:50 mark when Thomas Carey got one over the head of Lawrence goalkeeper
Hunter Lanton. The score stayed that way until more than 20 minutes had elapsed in the second half as Northland packed in the defense.
Mueller shook loose and his header off a pass from
Rodrigo Angulo Molina found the back of the net to tie the match at 1-1 at the 68:10 mark. The Vikings kept the pressure on and leading scorer
Konstantinos Fardellas drew a foul in the box, and Lawrence was awarded a penalty kick.
McLaughlin stepped up and drilled the shot to his left, but Northland goalkeeper Jamie Colvill guessed right and got a hand on the ball. McLaughlin's blast kept on going and found the back of the net for a 2-1 lead at the 76:55 mark.
Northland (1-5-0) had several free kicks from just outside the Lawrence box in the final 10 minutes but weren't able to convert.
Lanton finished with one save for Lawrence, and Colvill had four saves for Northland. Lawrence had a 19-12 edge in shots for the match.
The Vikings return to play Saturday when they open Midwest Conference competition with a match at Lake Forest College.
