FOND DU LAC, Wis. -- The Lawrence University men's hockey team skated to a 5-5 overtime tie with Marian University on Saturday night at the Blue Line Ice Center and took back the Battle of Highway 41 trophy in the process.
The Vikings lost the shootout 2-1, but Lawrence picked up four points from the weekend series to regain the traveling trophy.
Lawrence needed some late heroics in regulation to force the overtime.
The Vikings trailed 5-3 when the Vikings pulled goaltender
Alex Mosquera for an extra attacker. The gamble paid off when
Zack Olen scored off assists from
Davis Kirkendall and
Kyle Gierman to trim the margin to 5-4 with 3:44 remaining.
The Vikings continued to press forward with the extra attacker and tied the game with just 10 seconds left.
Ivan Galaguzov knotted the game at 5-5 with his fourth goal of the season as Olen and
Will Robertson collected assists.
Neither team scored in the five-minute overtime so the game went to a shootout.Â
Olen scored for Lawrence as the first shooter, and Jaymes Knee tied it for the Sabres on their third shooter. No one scored again until eighth shooter, Austin Nault, scored for the Sabres to end it.
Mosquera finished with 37 saves for the Vikings (5-7-2, 3-4-1 NCHA), and Colby Muise stopped 33 shots for the Sabres (6-7-3, 1-6-2).
Lawrence got on the board first when
Zach Lodes scored off an assist from
Will Crull at the 8:53 mark of the first. The Sabres tied it just 1:13 later, but the Vikings grabbed the lead back quickly.
Charles Stewart scored his first goal of the season with assists from
Curtis Weyerhaeuser and Olen with 4:31 left in the first.
Marian tied it at 2-2 with a goal just 51 seconds into the second period, and the Sabres added two more goals in the period to grab a 4-2 lead after two. Nick Cherkowski then scored for the Sabres exactly two minutes into the third for a 5-2 edge.
 Â
Akhmed Malsagov started the comeback for Lawrence when he got his first collegiate goal off a pass from
Matt Meininger just seven seconds after the Sabres had scored. The score stayed 5-3 until Lawrence cashed in twice late with the extra attackers.
It's a quick turnaround for the Vikings as they play a two-game series at No. 1-ranked Adrian College on Monday and Tuesday.Â
