Vikings complete weekend sweep of Finlandia

APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University men's hockey team took command in the second period Sunday and went on to a 4-1 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association win over Finlandia University at the Appleton Ice Center.
Lawrence (7-9-2, 5-6-1 NCHA) broke a 1-1 tie with two second-period goals and then added a tally in the third period for the final margin.
Zach Lodes had a goal and an assist for the Vikings, and defenseman Curtis Weyerhaeuser had three assists as Lawrence completed a weekend sweep of the Lions.
Finlandia (1-18-0, 0-12-0) jumped ahead as the Lions scored on the power play 7:38 into the opening period. The Lions were 1-for-5 on the man-advantage for the game.
Lawrence tied the game late in the first period when Davis Kirkendall rifled one past Marcus Gloss for a 1-1 deadlock. Matt Meininger and Lodes both picked up assists on the goal with 2:43 left in the first.
The power play then gave Lawrence the lead for good early in the second period. After Finlandia's Nate Holm received a five-minute major for checking from behind, Lawrence cashed in on the ensuing power play.
Cory Checco zipped a shot past Gloss at the 4:46 mark to give the Vikings a 2-1 lead. Ivan Galaguzov and Weyerhaeuser both collected assists on the goal, which proved to be the game-winner.
Just under four minutes later, Weyerhaeuser fired a wrist shot through the traffic, and Tyler Jensen tipped it past Gloss to give Lawrence a 3-1 lead at the 8:33 mark.
The Lawrence penalty killers then stepped up early in the third period to preserve the advantage. Lawrence was already on the penalty kill after Meininger was whistled for slashing at the 4:29 mark. Will Robertson was then called for boarding just over a minute later, and the Vikings would be two men down for 49 seconds.
Lawrence killed off the two-man advantage and then disposed of the rest of Robertson's penalty to preserve the 3-1 advantage.
Lodes then extended the lead for the Vikings when he scored off a rebound at the 9:34 mark to put Lawrence up 4-1. Weyerhaeuser and Vincent Dekumbis both picked up assists on that goal.
The Lawrence defense limited Finlandia to 22 shots, and Alex Mosquera made 21 saves to earn the victory for the Vikings. Lawrence snapped off 38 shots, and Gloss finished with 34 saves.
Lawrence returns to action next weekend when the Vikings face Lake Forest College in a two-game series.
