LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- The Lawrence University men's hockey team got off to a fast start Friday and cruised to a 5-1 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association victory over Lake Forest College at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse.
Lawrence scored three times in the first period and got an outstanding effort from goaltender
Alex Mosquera to grab the road win.
 Â
Ivan Galaguzov scored twice and added an assist, and
Zach Lodes had a goal and an assist for the Vikings (8-9-2, 6-6-1 NCHA). Defenseman
Kyle Gierman collected assists on three of Lawrence's first four goals.
Mosquera made 29 saves and played a big role in denying the Foresters (6-13-1, 4-6-1) on all four of their power-play chances.
Lawrence cashed in on its first power play of the game after Jared Gerger was whistled for interference. Galaguzov scored at the 6:02 mark on the ensuing power play off assists from Gierman and
Davis Kirkendall for a 1-0 edge.
The Vikings scored again just over two minutes later off a faceoff in the Lake Forest zone. The puck was loose near the Lake Forest net, and
Oliver DeCroock fired it past Carson Poulin for a 2-0 lead at the 8:39 mark. Lodes picked up the assist on that goal.
Gerger went back to the penalty box after a hooking call with 1:21 left in the first period, and the Vikings scored again. Galaguzov got his second power-play goal of the period with 28 seconds left in the period. Gierman and
Vincent Dekumbis picked up assists as the Vikings built a 3-0 lead.Â
Lawrence went 2-for-9 on the power play for the game.
The Vikings quickly made it 4-0 at the start of the second period.
Will Robertson scored just 51 seconds into the second with Gierman and
Tyler Jensen picking up assists.
That goal chased Poulin, who finished with 10 saves. Nick Wiencek played the remainder of the contest and had 28 saves for the Foresters. Lawrence finished with 43 shots, and Lake Forest had 30.
Lake Forest (6-13-1, 4-6-1) scored midway through the third period to close to 4-1, and the Foresters pulled Wiencek for extra attacker with 3:24 left. The Foresters couldn't score, but Lodes added an empty-net goal as the buzzer sounded for the final margin. Galaguzov and
Will Crull both had assists on the final goal.
The teams wrap up the series on Saturday night at the Appleton Ice Center.
