Vikings tie Foresters, pick up two points with shootout win

APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University men's hockey team skated to a 3-3 overtime tie Saturday with Lake Forest College, but the Vikings grabbed two points in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association standings with a shootout win.
Lawrence won the shootout 4-3, and that secured five points on the weekend for Lawrence. The Vikings downed Lake Forest 5-1 in the series opener on Friday for three points.
Lake Forest grabbed the early lead on a fluky goal just 3:31 into the opening period. Lawrence tied the score at the 17:35 mark of the first when Cory Checco pounced on a rebound and hammered it home for a 1-1 tie after the opening period. Will Crull and Zack Olen collected assists on Checco's tally.
The Vikings were on the power play early in the second, and Matt Meininger cashed in for Lawrence. His wrist shot found the bottom corner of the net at the 2:17 mark for a 2-1 lead as Crull and Zach Lodes picked up assists on the power-play goal.
The teams then traded goals in the third as Lake Forest tied the game at 2-2 early in the period. Oliver DeCroock scored off an assist from Lodes at the 9:40 mark to put the Vikings up 3-2. Lake Forest then scored at the 11:32 mark to tie the game and force overtime.
Neither team scored in the five-minute overtime, and the game went to a shootout.
Lake Forest scored on its first shooter, but Olen's backhander found the back of the net to tie the shootout at 1-1. It stayed that way until the sixth shooter when Ivan Galaguzov scored for the Vikings. Lake Forest answered with a goal, but Vincent Dekumbis scored to give the Vikings a 3-2 edge.
Lake Forest scored again to tie it, and the next two shooters both missed.
Kyle Gierman was the ninth shooter for Lawrence and went top shelf to give the Vikings a 4-3 edge. Lawrence goaltender Alex Mosquera then stymied Shane Hathaway to close out the shootout.
Mosquera finished with 39 saves for the Vikings, and Nick Wiencek made 25 saves for the Foresters.
