CHICAGO, Ill. -- Lawrence University track and field standout
Cristyn Oliver added another achievement to what has been a spectacular 2021-22 campaign by breaking the school record in the 5,000 meters on Saturday.
Racing in the Aurora Grand Prix at Gately Park Track and Field Center, Oliver raced to a time of 18:27.11, and that tops a 24-year-old record. Oliver, a sophomore who finished sixth in the event, topped the record of 18:36.34 set by Cathy Kempen back in 1998.
Two other Vikings competed in the event as rookie
Riley Winebrenner took eighth in 18:46.86 and sophomore
Althea Foster was 11th in 19:24.25.
Oliver had a breakout cross country season that saw her win the individual title and lead Lawrence to the team championship. Oliver also qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships for the first time and was chosen as the Midwest Conference Newcomer of the Year.
On the men's side, sophomore Adam Bruce raced to the top finish of the day as he took fourth in the 5,000 in 15:25.44. The winner was Jonathan Fernandez of Chicago State, a Division I institution, in a time of 14:58.87.
