First-half goals lift Vikings over Illinois College

APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University men's soccer team scored a pair of first-half goals Saturday and went on to a 2-1 Midwest Conference victory over Illinois College on Ron Roberts Field at the Banta Bowl.
Zach Dale and Konstantinos Fardellas both scored in the opening 19 minutes for Lawrence. Goalkeeper Nason Lancina made five saves to earn his first collegiate victory.
The Vikings (2-7-1, 1-1-0 MWC) got on the board quickly after drawing a corner kick in the opening two minutes. Jack Morrissey sent the corner kick into the box, and it found the head of 6-foot-5 Zach Dale. Dale towered above the Illinois College defenders and headed the ball past Carlos Garcia for a 1-0 lead at the 2:46 mark.
Lawrence doubled the lead in the 19th minute. Derek Morales found Fardellas, who blasted a right-foot strike past Garcia at 18:34 for a 2-0 edge.
That lead stood until Tyler Lunning scored for Illinois College (7-4-1, 0-2-0) at 64:14. Lunning's shot hit the inside of the post and trickled in to trim the margin to 2-1.
That's as close as the Blueboys would get as Lawrence did a nice job controlling the play over the final 25 minutes.
Lawrence piled up 14 shots, and Garcia made three saves for the Blueboys.
