Late heroics lifts Vikings to tie with Cornell

APPLETON, Wis. -- This was a tie that felt a lot more like a win.
The Lawrence University men's soccer team scored with 3.1 seconds left Saturday to forge a 4-4 Midwest Conference tie with Cornell College on Ron Roberts Field at the Banta Bowl.
The Vikings, who battled from behind all day, got the tie when Mark Todd won the ball in the box in the waning seconds. Todd crossed the ball to Konstantinos Fardellas, who buried the ball in the back of the net with just over three seconds remaining. It was Fardellas' sixth goal of the season.
Lawrence (2-9-4, 1-3-2 MWC) trailed 2-0 less than 18 minutes into the first half, but the Vikings fought back. Cornell (6-6-3, 1-3-2) was whistled for a handball in the box to give Lawrence a penalty kick. Sean McLaughlin took the kick for the Vikings hit the ball left when Cornell keeper Will Bickel dived to the right. McLaughlin's goal at 19:07 trimmed the deficit to 2-1.
Cornell countered with a goal in the 27th minute, but Lawrence wasn't done in the first half. Cornell was called for a foul about 25 yards out, and Jack Morrissey took the free kick for the Vikings. Morrissey fired it into the upper left corner of the net at the 43:32 mark for his second goal of the season. That left the Vikings with a 3-2 deficit at the half.
It didn't take long for Lawrence to tie the match in the second half.
It was Morrissey who found rookie Eamon Rougvie in the box in the 48th minute. Rougvie got between two Cornell defenders and beat a diving Bickel to score his first career goal and tie the game at 3-3 at the 47:33 mark.
Cornell got its best scoring chance of the second half on a 3-on-2 breakaway, and the Rams scored at the 66:01 mark to take a 4-3 lead.
Lawrence had a 23-18 edge in shots for the match.
Lawrence goalie Nason Lancina stopped 10 shots for the Vikings, and Bickel had five saves for the Rams.
