Tolu's hat trick leads Vikings to runaway victory

APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University women's soccer team celebrated Senior Day in style on Sunday with a 9-0 nonconference victory over Mount Mary University on Ron Roberts Field at the Banta Bowl.
Senior Samantha Tolu posted a natural hat trick, and seniors Charlotte Linebarger and goalkeeper Sarah Yochem both posted their first career goals.
The Vikings (8-8-0) had a 42-3 edge in shots and led 6-0 at the half en route to the rout.
Makenzy Dreher opened the scoring just 1:29 into the contest when she took a pass from Erica Grube and beat Mount Mary (0-12-3) goalkeeper Dylan Christensen for a 1-0 lead.
Tolu then started her scoring binge just over 10 minutes later. A handball in the box gave the Vikings a penalty kick, and Tolu converted for a 2-0 lead at the 13:19 mark. Tolu scored again at 21:46 off a nice feed from Madi Jones for a 3-0 advantage. She finished the hat trick exactly two minutes later when Grube found Tolu with a pass and she scored again at 23:46 for a 4-0 edge.
It was the second hat trick of Tolu's career. She recorded the first one against Maranatha Baptist University in 2019.
The Vikings weren't done in the first half as Kaitlyn Khazen scored off a pass from Natalie Linebarger at the 30:29 mark for a 5-0 edge. Charlotte Linebarger, who has been a stalwart on defense in her career, got into the attack and scored her first career goal. With assists from her sister, Natalie, and Sophia Morin, Charlotte Linebarger scored at the 43:33 mark to give Lawrence a 6-0 lead at the half.
Yochem, who played the first half in goal, played in the field to start the second half and quickly got her first career goal. With assists from Tolu and Dreher, Yochem got the ball in front of the net and punched one past Christensen for a 7-0 lead just 2:14 into the second half.
Khazen added a second goal when she took a pass from Sydney Allen and scored at the 56:40 mark. Grube, a first-year midfielder, completed the scoring for the Vikings with her first career goal. Jacey Stanich sent a cross into the box, and Khazen redirected into the Grube on the far side. Grube hammered it into the open net at the 71:07 mark for the final tally.
Lawrence returns to Midwest Conference play on Wednesday when the Vikings travel to Beloit College for a key match with the Bucs.
