APPLETON, Wis. --
Adnan Sarancic scored a career-high 25 points Thursday as the Lawrence University men's basketball team toppled St. Norbert College 68-56 in a nonconference game at Alexander Gymnasium.
Sarancic finished with a double-double as he grabbed 10 rebounds and shot 10-for-15 from the floor, including 2-for-5 from 3-point range. Sarancic, whose previous career high was 23 last season against Monmouth College, also added three blocks and a pair of steals.
Lawrence (1-3) got nine points apiece from
Matthew Kaznikov and
Elliot Jung, and Kaznikov added five rebounds. Rookie forward
Nick Hesch chipped in with seven points, four rebounds and a block.
Lawrence seized control of the game early in the second half. The Vikings went on a 12-2 run fueled by 3-pointers from Jung and Hesch. Sarancic then collected a steal and layup to put the Vikings up 43-32 with 15:26 remaining.
The Vikings were up by as many as 14 before St. Norbert (0-2) trimmed the lead back to 48-38 with 10:39 left.Â
Sarancic then hit back-to-back jumpers before
Parker Prahl scored on a layup and
Ryne Panzer buried a 3-pointer to put Lawrence up 57-38 with 8:13 remaining.Â
The Green Knights, who were limited to 20-of-71 shooting (28.2 percent) from the floor, chipped away at the advantage and cut the lead to 61-53 with 1:32 left. Lawrence then went 7-for-8 from the foul line in the final 1:13 to seal the victory.
Carter Gebler led St. Norbert, which hit just 4-of-25 shots (16 percent) from 3-point range, with 13 points.
Lawrence's victory snapped a 23-game winless streak against St. Norbert, which was a member of the Midwest Conference for many years. Lawrence hadn't defeated the Green Knights since a 10-game win streak against St. Norbert ended after the 2008-09 season.
The Vikings return to action at home on Saturday when they face Northland College in a nonconference game.   Â
