APPLETON, Wis. -- It was a night of firsts Saturday at the Appleton Ice Center for the Lawrence University men's hockey team.
  First collegiate coaching victory for
Brett Wall. First college goal, an overtime game-winner no less, for
Jayden Jensen. First collegiate victory in goal for
Owen Carlson.
That trifecta of firsts for Lawrence added up to a 4-3 overtime win over the Milwaukee School of Engineering in a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association game. The Vikings rallied to tie the game three times before grabbing the victory in a wild overtime.
The win was the first for head coach
Brett Wall, who took the reins of the Lawrence program in June. Jensen scored with 2:00 left in overtime to net his first collegiate goal, and Carlson stopped 26 shots to pick up the victory in goal.
The Vikings were down early in the first period after giving up a short-handed goal, but Lawrence (1-5-0, 1-3-0 NCHA) bounced back.
Zach Lodes scored on the power play off a pass from
Ryan Williams at the 10:48 mark to tie it at 1-1.
The Raiders (4-2-0, 3-1-0) scored on the power play just 1:13 later to grab a 2-1 advantage, and the score stayed that way until late in the second period. Lawrence's
Jack Michels took a pass from
Kyle Gierman and got a breakaway. Michels beat MSOE goaltender Austin Schwab with 2:03 left in the second period to tie the game at 2-2.
MSOE struck for a goal early in the third period, but a power-play opportunity late in the period allowed the Vikings to pull even. After MSOE's Jackson Hughes was called for delay of game, teammate Preston Park was then whistled for tripping. With Lawrence's two-man advantage winding down,
Ivan Galaguzov scored on the power play off assists from Michels and
Cristian Tallarico with 2:35 left in the third to tie the game at 3-3.
The Vikings were then called for a penalty to put MSOE on the power play, but Lawrence killed off the remaining time in regulation to force overtime.Â
Just 15 seconds into the OT, MSOE's Ryan Reid was whistled for slashing, and CJ Kline was then called for cross-checking at the 2:10 mark.
The Vikings cashed in on the ensuing power play when Jensen whistled a low shot into the right corner of the net at the 3:00 mark for the game-winner. Gierman and
Cory Checco picked up assists on the game-winner.  Â
Lawrence went 3-for-11 on the power play, and MSOE finished 1-for-7.Â
The Vikings return to nonconference play on Nov. 22 when they travel to Saint Mary's (Minn.) University.
