Balance leads Vikings past Rockford in season opener

ROCKFORD, Ill. -- The Lawrence University women's basketball team used a balanced attack and solid defense Tuesday to post a 58-46 nonconference victory over Rockford University at the Seaver Center.
Lawrence had three players score in double figures and held Rockford to 30.2 percent shooting from the floor.
Mallory Meyer paced the Vikings with 16 points as she hit 5-of-9 shots from the floor and picked up six rebounds, three blocks and two steals.
Maggie Culver and Emma Carlson both had a double-double for the Vikings. Culver scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to go with three assists, two steals and a block. Carlson had 10 points and 10 rebounds to go with five assists.
The Vikings also got eight points, five assists and two steals from senior guard Ashley Batac.
The Regents hit on just 19-of-63 shots from the floor and shot 14.3 percent (2-for-14) from beyond the arc.
Lawrence scored the last four points of the opening quarter on jumpers from Culver and Carlson and led 14-11 after one. Lawrence quickly pulled away in the second as the Vikings completed a 9-2 run on Meyer's layup for a 20-12 lead. The Vikings then went on an 8-0 outburst, capped by another Meyer layup, for a 29-14 advantage.
Lawrence led 29-16 at the half and maintained a double-digit lead for much of the second half. The Regents cut the lead to 36-27 late in the third quarter, but Lawrence finished the quarter on a 7-2 run, capped by Batac's 3-pointer, for a 43-29 lead heading to the fourth quarter.
The Regents got as close as 10 points with 3:13 left in the game, but Culver answered with a layup for the Vikings. Rockford then missed four consecutive shots from the floor to help seal the victory for Lawrence.
The Vikings head to the Nicolet National Bank Tip-Off Tournament this weekend at St. Norbert College.
