ROSEMOUNT, Minn. -- The Lawrence University men's hockey team scored in the third period Saturday to force overtime and skated to a 2-2 nonconference tie with St. John's University at Rosemount Ice Arena.
Lawrence got the tying goal from defenseman
Kyle Gierman and the first goal of the contest came from fellow defenseman
Jayden Jensen.Â
Jensen opened the scoring 5:15 into the second period while the Vikings (2-8-1) were on the penalty kill. Lawrence's
Jack Michels was sent off for cross checking at the 4:03 mark, but it was the Vikings who cashed in.
Jensen scored his third goal of the season and the first short-hander of his career off assists from
James Scott and
Hugh Anderson to stake the Vikings to a 1-0 lead.Â
The Johnnies (6-5-2) tied the game at the 12:19 mark of the second, and then took a 2-1 lead with a power-play goal with just 19 seconds left in the period.Â
An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on St. John's Lewis Crosby put the Vikings on the power play in the third period. Gierman scored on the ensuing power play to tie the game at 2-2 at the 8:14 mark.
Zach Lodes and
Ivan Galaguzov picked up assists on the game-tying tally.
The Vikings then killed off a five-minute major later in the period to preserve the tie. Lawrence then went on the power play with 1:15 left in regulation but couldn't get the game-winner. Lawrence went 1-for-4 on the power play, and St. John's was 1-for-5.
The teams played a five-minute overtime with the Vikings getting two shots on goal and St. John's picking up four. St. John's had a 32-31 edge in shots on goal for the game.
 Â
Owen Carlson had 30 saves for the Vikings, and Bailey Huber stopped 29 shots for the Johnnies.Â
