APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University men's hockey team took No. 5 St. Norbert College to the limit Saturday in a nonconference game at the Appleton Ice Center.
The Green Knights held off a late surge by the Vikings and pulled out a 3-1 victory to start the second half of the season.
Lawrence (2-9-1) trailed 2-0 heading to the third period, but the Vikings got a faceoff in the St. Norbert zone in the period's opening minute.Â
The Vikings intercepted a pass and sent the puck behind the St. Norbert net where
Oliver DeCroock attempted a wrap-around to stuff the puck past St. Norbert goaltender Colby Entz.
Entz managed to push the puck away, but
Jack Michels jumped on the loose puck and found the back of the net just 37 seconds into the final period to cut the Green Knights lead to 2-1. DeCroock and
Hugh Anderson both picked up assists on Michels' second goal of the season.
The Vikings continued to pressure St. Norbert in the final period, but Entz turned away the final eight shots on goal by Lawrence. He made a big save on
Akhmed Malsagov's one-timer later in the third. Lawrence pulled goaltender
Owen Carlson for the final 1:23 but couldn't get the equalizer.
Michael McChesney then picked up an empty-net goal with five seconds left when a Lawrence defender fell and lost control of the puck in the Lawrence zone.
Carlson finished with 32 saves for Lawrence, and Entz had 13 stops for the Green Knights (9-3-1). Johnny Roberts made the start in net and made 10 save over the first 29:24 of the contest.
St. Norbert took the lead with 4:59 left in the opening period on Liam Fraser's goal, and then made it 2-0 when McChesney redirected a shot that ended up being a knuckleball that got past Carlson at the 3:15 mark of the second period.
Lawrence returns to nonconference action on Tuesday when the Vikings host St. Mary's University.
