Vikings pull away in final minutes to topple Grinnell

APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University men's basketball team surged past Grinnell College in the final two minutes Saturday and went on to an 87-82 Midwest Conference victory over the Pioneers at Alexander Gymnasium.
Adnan Sarancic led four Vikings in double figures with a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds. Sarancic went 7-for-11 from the floor and 4-for-4 from the foul line along with adding two assists and two blocks.
First-year guard Ryne Panzer came off the bench to score 14 points to go with three rebounds, two assists and a steal for the Vikings. Lawrence's Arnav Jain added 13 points and hit multiple key free throws late on his way to going 7-for-8 from the stripe. Matthew Kaznikov chipped in with 12 points for the Vikings, and Johnny Semany had nine. Nick Hesch grabbed 10 rebounds for Lawrence and scored six points.
Lawrence (4-4, 1-1 MWC) scored five consecutive points, capped by Semany's layup, to build a double-digit lead at 68-58 with 8:46 remaining. Grinnell bounced back and scored 11 straight points to take a 69-68 advantage. The teams traded the lead before Panzer's jumper with 1:48 remaining put Lawrence on top for good at 74-73.
After Grinnell missed a 3-pointer, Elliot Jung was fouled and drained a pair of free throws with 1:34 remaining. Aiden Gilbert countered with two free throws for Grinnell, but Sarancic's layup off a feed from Panzer gave Lawrence a 78-75 lead with 1:05 left.
The Pioneers missed a 3-pointer, and Parker Prahl's layup off a pass from Sarancic put Lawrence up 80-75 with 48 seconds remaining. An offensive foul gave the ball back to the Vikings, and Grinnell fouled Jain with 36 seconds left. Jain hit both free throws for an 82-75 advantage.
Gilbert's layup cut the lead to five, and Jain made one free throw after being fouled again. Adam Phillips then threw in a 3-pointer to cut Lawrence's lead to 83-80 with 18 seconds left.
The Pioneers fouled Jain again, and he made both free throws for an 85-80 lead with 16 ticks remaining. After the Pioneers missed a 3-pointer, Sarancic grabbed the rebound and was fouled. He converted both free throws with seven seconds left to seal the victory.
Lawrence did major damage at the foul line by hitting 28-of-35 free throws (80 percent) in the game. Grinnell (3-5, 2-1), which lost for the first time in the league, went 9-of-11 from the foul line.
Grinnell, which hit just 9-of-40 shots from beyond the arc, led 19-11 midway through the first half. Lawrence countered with a 16-4 run, with four points apiece from Hesch and Panzer, to grab a 27-23 lead with 6:19 left in the opening half. Lawrence pushed the lead to 46-37 before settling for a 46-40 lead at the half.
