Vikings can't dig out of early hole against Trine

ANGOLA, Ind. -- The Lawrence University men's hockey team fell behind by three goals early Friday and never recovered in a 4-1 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association playoff loss to Trine University at Thunder Arena.
A Trine win or tie in the second game of the Harris Cup quarterfinal series on Saturday would allow the Thunder to advance. Lawrence needs to win Saturday's game to force a decisive mini-game.
Trine jumped out to a 2-0 lead with two goals in a span of 13 seconds in first three minutes of the contest. Chace McCardle scored on the power play at the 2:42 mark, and Justin Meers scored at 2:55 for a 2-0 edge. Trine then got a short-handed goal at 11:25 to push the lead to 3-0.
After a scoreless second period, Lawrence got back into the game on Matt Meininger's power-play goal at 6:19 of the third period. Zack Olen and Hugh Anderson picked up assists for the Vikings.
Lawrence went 1-for-7 on the power play, and Trine was 1-for-4.
The Vikings pulled goaltender Alex Mosquera late, but Trine sealed the win with an empty-net goal with 2:10 remaining. Mosquera finished with 26 saves, and Elias Sandholm had 30 saves for the Thunder.
