Vikings outslug Illinois College to sweep doubleheader

APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University baseball team pounded out 35 hits, including five home runs, to sweep a Midwest Conference doubleheader from Illinois College on Sunday at Whiting Field.
Lawrence won the opener 23-12 in eight innings and took the nightcap 7-4 to complete a sweep of the three-game series.
In a wild first game, Lawrence (12-6, 7-1 MWC) rapped out 24 hits, including two homers and seven doubles. The game saw Illinois College rally from six down to take the lead and Lawrence come back from a five-run deficit to win the game via the 10-run rule.
Taylor Freeman went 4-for-5 with a three-run homer, four runs batted in and two runs scored for the Vikings. Jacob Charon, the leading home-run hitter in the nation, smacked a homer on his way to going 3-for-4 with four runs RBIs and five runs scored.
Lawrence shortstop Spenser Ross went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, drove in five runs and scored three times. Edan Perez went 4-for-5, drove in a pair and scored a pair of runs for Lawrence. Parker Knoll and Jeffery Cambra both collected three hits and scored three runs apiece, and Mitchell Sandleback had a pair of hits and drove in two runs.
Shane Foley worked 2.2 innings of relief to pick up the win. He allowed one run on three hits, struck out four and walked four.
Lawrence bolted to a 6-0 lead after two innings, getting an RBI double from Perez in the first and a run-scoring double from Charon in the second. The Blueboys (8-16, 3-6) scored 11 runs over the next three innings to take an 11-6 lead.
Lawrence trimmed the lead to 11-8 in the fifth when Charon led off with a homer and Freeman added a run-scoring double. The Vikings then scored five times in the sixth to take the lead back for good. Ross had a two-run double in the sixth, and Perez added an RBI double as Lawrence took a 13-11 lead.
The Vikings then blew up for six more runs in the seventh to put the game away. Ross and Sandleback both had two-run doubles in the inning as Lawrence stretched the lead to 19-11.
Freeman then ended the game in the eighth when he hit a three-run blast to left, his second three-run homer of the series, for the final margin.
In the second game, Zach Leslie smacked a pair of two-run homers as Lawrence rallied from an early deficit. Leslie finished 2-for-4, drove in four runs and scored twice. Cambra and Freeman also went 2-for-4, and Charon hit his second home run of the doubleheader.
Elden Santana worked the first five innings to get the win. He allowed four runs on five hits, struck out four and walked one. Jordan Schaefer didn't allow a hit over the final four innings to get his second save of the season.
Illinois College led 3-1 after scoring three unearned runs on Kellen Blum's home run in the second. The Vikings tied the game in the third when Knoll was hit by a pitch, and Leslie belted a two-run homer, his first of the season, to knot the game at 3-3.
The Blueboys grabbed the lead back with a run in the fourth, but Lawrence took the lead for good in the fifth. Cambra started the rally with a two-out single, and Leslie followed with a titanic two-run shot to give Lawrence a 5-4 lead. Charon followed a solo homer, and the Vikings led 6-4. The Vikings tacked on an insurance run in the eighth on Freeman's RBI double for the final margin.
Lawrence returns to action Tuesday when the Vikings travel to Ripon College for a Midwest Conference game at Francis Field.
