Vikings, Charon slam Ripon to complete series sweep

RIPON, Wis. -- Jacob Charon became Lawrence University baseball's home run king on Tuesday, and his teammates joined in the long ball barrage as the Vikings beat Ripon College 15-13 in a Midwest Conference game at Francis Field.
Charon hit a grand slam and a solo shot to push his season total to 14 and his career total to 17, breaking the Lawrence record of 16 set by Kevin Fitzsimmons from 2003-06. The Vikings hit six home runs in the game and have 29 on the season, blowing past the team record of 25 set in 2006.
Lawrence (13-6, 8-1 MWC) also swept the three-game season series from Ripon (9-9, 5-4), and the Vikings ran their win streak to six games. That is the longest win streak for the Vikings since they won seven straight in 2012.
Charon finished the game 2-for-3 with two homers, five runs batted in and three runs runs scored. Jeffery Cambra went 3-for-5 with a homer and drove in three runs for the Vikings. Zach Leslie went 2-for-4 with a homer and also drove in three runs for Lawrence. Taylor Freeman went 2-for-5 with a homer, Parker Knoll was 2-for-4 and scored three runs and Edan Perez also smacked a homer for the Vikings and drove in a pair.
Preston Anderson made his season debut on the mound and picked up the win with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief. Rookie David Jachimiak set down the Red Hawks in order in the ninth to pick up his first career save.
The game looked like a pitchers' duel early with the only run coming on Charon's solo homer in the top of the fourth. Ripon scored three times in the bottom of the fifth, but Lawrence tied it in the sixth. Knoll singled with one out, and Cambra followed with a homer to left field to tie the game at 3-3.
Ripon then seemed to seize control of the contest with five runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull out to an 8-3 lead. That lead was short-lived.
Freeman started the top of the seventh with a single, but the rally looked like it was fizzling after a pair of outs. Knoll delivered a single to score Freeman and trim the lead to 8-4. After Cambra followed with a single to put runners at the corners, Ripon replaced starting pitcher Brock Warren.
Leslie greeted reliever Brock Turkington with a booming three-run homer to left to trim the lead to 8-7. Charon drew a walk, and Perez belted a two-run homer to give Lawrence a 9-8 lead to complete the six-run outburst.
Lawrence stretched its advantage with five more runs in the eighth. Mitchell Sandleback and Knoll started the rally by being hit with pitches, and Cambra followed with a single to score Sandleback for a 10-8 lead.
Charon then blasted a grand slam to left field to secure the career record and give Lawrence a 14-8 advantage.
The Vikings ran into trouble of their own in the bottom half of the inning when Ripon scored five times on just three hits as Lawrence issued five walks in the frame. When the dust settled, Ripon had cut the lead to 14-13.
Freeman led off the ninth with a homer to the left field corner to give the Vikings some breathing room at 15-13. Jachimiak then got a groundout, strikeout and flyout in the bottom of the ninth to secure the win.
Lawrence returns to action Friday when the Vikings travel to Cornell College to start a three-game series.
